Humane Animal Dispatch volunteers wanted.

TVP is pleased to announce the introduction of a more robust HAD (Humane Animal Dispatch) team. The HAD team are a group of trained volunteers who assist the force in handling injured deer involved in road collisions. These teams aim to reduce animal suffering and free up police resources – particularly armed response. Volunteers are trained in animal handling, safe shooting techniques, and relevant legislation related to humane dispatch.

The team are equipped with the necessary kit to carry out their roles, such as amber lights and hi-vis jackets, while they will attend roadside incidents in their own vehicles. They also ensure proper protocols are followed, including police presence for safety and to manage public interaction.

Current estimates are that over 74,000 deer vehicle collisions occur each year on UK roads, and with the unrelenting increase in the country’s deer population, the year on year trend of collision numbers is going in one direction – up.

A deer-vehicle collision (DVC) occurs when one or more deer and a human-operated vehicle collide on a roadway. It can result in deer fatality, property damage, and human injury or death. The number of accidents, injuries, and fatalities varies from year to year and region.

In most instances, the actual dispatch is quick and straightforward. Officers present at the scene should be able to close the road and ensure people are back at a safe distance to let the volunteer get on with the job in hand.

The agreed model is that anyone applying to be a HAD must now have passed the recently developed DMQ (Deer Management Qualification) course on Humane Animal Dispatch, followed by a selection interview with a current HAD volunteer and police officer to ensure you have the right aptitude. If selected, you are then put through a very rigorous practical assessment. This involves the police firearms unit, covering some realistic scenarios you are likely to encounter.

If you would like to volunteer, please email tvphadteams@thamesvalley.police.uk, or take a look at the advert on our Vacancies portal: https://thamesvalleypolice.tal.net/vx/lang-en-GB/mobile-0/appcentre-3/brand-3/xf-6740aed3b196/candidate/so/pm/6/pl/1/opp/12871-Volunteer-Humane-Animal-Dispatch/en-GB
